Lancet study gathered more than 200 scientists from 17 countries who analyzed health data of more than 220,000 people. At the beginning of the study, the participants had no heart problems and their conditions were observed almost for a decade. During the observations, the number of people with cardiovascular diseases became 14,297. Di Angelantonio, professor at the University of Cambridge and one of the study’s co-authors, explains: “the BMI which measures the general obesity or the waist circumference can predict risks from cardiovascular diseases.”
How to predict possible cardiovascular diseases
According to the study, the other important risk factors are:
High blood pressure
High level of cholesterol
Diabetes
Di Angelantonio claims that the information about these factors, in any type of body shape, is enough to predict a certain possibility from heart problems.
Does this prove that belly fat is the same as any other fat?
Not quite. In 2012, a study about belly fat was presented at the congress of the European Society of Cardiology. The authors of the study stated that the belly fat is far more dangerous than any other types of fat. High BMI is not a strong enough predictor of heart diseases. The gist is to maintain a healthy body weight. All in all, obesity is a global epidemic and one from ten adults around the world is considered to be obese nowadays.
The rule is that your BMI should be around 19, 9-24, 9. Also, the waist of women should not be more than 90cm. and men’s should not be more than 101cm. When your weight is divided by your height you get BMI.
