10 Surprising Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil
Go nuts for coconut oil
- To shave your legs – seriously! Ditch the expensive shaving cream which is full of who knows how many toxins and chemicals and use some trusty coconut oil to remove hair from your legs and underarms. Not only is it chemical free it smells great and it has skin-soothing properties to help your legs look fab!
- In a wonderful body scrub – if you’re a fan of body scrubs you might not want to look too closely at the label, because again they’re full of those pesky chemicals. Make your own scrub by gently heating 1/2 a cup of coconut oil on the stove (not too hot you want it to melt not destroy the goodness) then pour it over 1 cup of brown sugar. Then add 5 drops of pure essential oil like Lavender or Joy for a fabulous scrub that’ll smell so good you’ll want to stay in the bath forever!
- To remove your makeup – yup it even works on waterproof mascara! You need just a little on a cotton ball and then sweep it over your eyes to remove all trace of your makeup.
- As an under eye cream – if you don’t wear eye makeup you can still use the coconut oil around your eye area to minimise the effects of fine lines and dark circles. You just need a pinch of oil gently warmed between your fingers and then dab it gently under your eyes.
- To deep condition your hair – if you check your regular bottle of conditioner you’ll probably find coconut oil on the ingredients list. It does a great job of penetrating the hair to help it look fabulous. A little goes a long way though, too much and you’ll end up a greasy mess. You want about a quarter size of oil, massage it into your hair, run a comb through then wrap a towel around your head and leave it to do it’s thing. If you do it before you go to bed it will have all night to feed your hair then you can shampoo it out in the morning.
- To soothe dry and chapped skin on your hands or feet – make your own whipped coconut oil hand cream by putting 1 cup of coconut oil (solid not melted) into your stand mixer and whisking on high speed for about 7 minutes. Then add about 10 drops of therapeutic grade Lavender oil and 10 drops of therapeutic grade Frankincense oil to boost the soothing properties of the oil. Store your cream in a glass jar at room temperature and use it as often as needed.
- As a body oil – when you’re fresh from the shower a quarter sized blob of oil makes the perfect body oil to deep condition your skin. Why not add a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil for a wonderful way to start the day
- To keep your lips kissable – if you’ve got a spare contact lens holder you can add a blob of oil and throw it in your purse so you can apply it throughout the day. Lavender Lip Balm makes a great homemade (frugal) gift for your friends whatever time of the year. Just add a drop or two of lavender oil to the coconut oil and use some of these fabulous slide tins to make your homemade lip balm look super cute!
- To highlight your cheekbones – yep you can make yourself look radiant with coconut oil! Dab a little liquified oil just above your eyebrows, lips and across the top of your cheekbones for that natural glow.
- To soften your cuticles – dry and ragged cuticles can get really sore, and they don’t look to great either. A dab of coconut oil during the day will help soften them up and you’ll have younger looking hands. Result!
